GreenBioBag develops custom recyclable coffee pouches for specialty coffee roasters, private-label coffee brands, distributors and coffee companies moving away from difficult-to-recycle multi-material laminates.
Our recyclable coffee packaging can be engineered around PE-based mono-material structures, combining product protection, reliable heat sealing and custom printing with a packaging design better suited to modern recycling streams.
For coffee brands selling into Europe, we can also develop packaging with the upcoming requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation — PPWR, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 — in mind.
Available for whole bean and ground coffee in stand-up, flat-bottom and side-gusset formats, with optional recyclable-compatible zipper and one-way degassing valve.
Coffee packaging is technically demanding.
Roasted coffee continues to release CO₂ after roasting while remaining sensitive to oxygen, moisture, aroma loss and, depending on the product, light exposure. This is why conventional coffee bags often use PET, aluminium foil and PE in the same laminate.
The problem is that combining several incompatible materials can make packaging much more difficult to recycle.
Our approach is different.
GreenBioBag develops recyclable coffee packaging bags around a predominant PE material family, reducing unnecessary material complexity while maintaining the barrier, sealing and mechanical properties required for roasted coffee.
Depending on the required shelf life and distribution environment, the structure can be adjusted using compatible barrier technologies and coatings.
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is changing the way brands evaluate packaging.
Instead of treating “recyclable” simply as a marketing claim, PPWR introduces a more structured approach based on Design for Recycling, material compatibility and recyclability performance.
GreenBioBag can work with coffee brands during this transition by focusing on several practical packaging priorities:
Moving from conventional PET/AL/PE structures toward compatible mono-material or predominantly PE structures can simplify the recycling pathway.
The main film is only part of the package.
For coffee bags, we also evaluate:
zipper
degassing valve
inks
coatings
adhesives
labels
surface finishes
These components should be considered together when designing a recyclable coffee pouch.
Sustainability should not create unnecessary coffee waste.
Barrier performance, seal integrity and packaging strength therefore remain part of the material-selection process.
For EU-market projects, packaging specifications can be prepared around material composition, structure, intended use and available supporting documentation to assist customers with their own PPWR assessment and compliance process.
The EU PPWR — Regulation (EU) 2025/40 — establishes a long-term shift toward packaging that can be effectively recycled.
Important milestones include:
PPWR Timeline | What It Means for Packaging |
|---|---|
12 August 2026 | PPWR generally becomes applicable |
By 2028 | EU Design-for-Recycling criteria are expected to be further defined through delegated acts |
2030 | Packaging will increasingly need to meet defined recyclability performance requirements |
2035 | Recyclability-at-scale becomes an important part of the assessment |
2038 | Higher recyclability performance becomes increasingly important for packaging placed on the EU market |
For this reason, brands developing packaging today should consider not only whether a pouch can technically be recycled, but also how its material structure, components and local waste infrastructure fit the future recycling system.
GreenBioBag describes these solutions as PPWR-ready because the packaging is designed to support the direction of PPWR recyclability requirements. Final compliance remains dependent on the specific finished packaging, applicable delegated legislation, product use and destination market.
Sustainable packaging does not have to look generic.
GreenBioBag provides full custom printing for recyclable coffee pouches, allowing specialty roasters to maintain premium shelf presentation while transitioning to more recycling-oriented structures.
