At GreenBioBag, we always want to be at the forefront of change in the packaging industry. For months, we did research into introducing recyclable plastic mailers. We listened to industry experts, and we continuously checked the Government’s publications to see the progress of the recycling industry. After all of this, we have decided to never bring in recycled plastic packaging. This is why:
1. The end-of-life of recycled plastic is always going to be plastic. In most cases, recycled plastic is treated like single use plastic.
2. When plastic is recycled, it goes through a washing process. This sends hundreds of thousands of micro plastics into the waterways and into the ocean
3. According to the Australian Government’s Department of the Environment and Energy, out of the 3.4 million tonnes of plastic used, only 9.4% was recovered and recycled. This means that 3 million tonnes was NOT recycled and ended up in landfill, in oceans and in marine life
4. By using recycled plastic, we give the manufacturers of virgin plastic reason to exist because they use the justification that “it can be recycled”
The only way to cut the vicious cycle is to stop the production and demand of any kind of plastic.
The biggest hurdle of compostable packaging is the fact that not everyone has a compost bin. It’s not ideal. We get it. But educating people on composting at home is our best chance to eradicate plastic in the shipping process. That’s our ultimate goal.
